Life as a Dog Bowl

So "I <3 my GoPro..."  And well you put and use these durable underwater tiny cameras just about anywhere! So why not the dog bowl?!  I originally dismissed this footage and considered to a failed test...but upon showing it to a few of my "reviewers" who gave rather optimistic and enjoyable reactions, I decided to put it out there!  Besides...my view of comedy and what makes me laugh tends to not be the same as the general 'pupulous.' *groans*

Enjoy!

Prometheus Movie Clip of a 2023 TED Talk

Cannot wait...

Ridley Scott originally intended for Prometheus to be a prelude to Alien but in-turn it has become a spin-off set in a alternate reality.
"Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well." -- Ridley Scott
This clip is a spectacular idea using a common science-fiction device, as well as tipping a hat towards 'the Corporation' in Alien.

The science-fiction genre often borrows something familiar from the real world, and inserts it into the fictional work, in this case TED Talks -- or in the case of Star Wars, the light-saber as swords, the blaster as gun, and the speeders as motorcycles.  The technique integrates the old and gives it a spin of new as to make the video able to connect and become immersed in the fictional world, and in turn the film.  This device is also highly notable in the sound effects of Star Wars as so they sound familiar but appear foreign, such as a wrench striking a taunt cable to produce the sound of a laser blaster.

As for the tipping of the hat, the character being introduced here, Mr. Weyland, is founding a company and the Corporation in Alien is called Weyland-Yutani.  Ridley Scott has been quoted as saying this is the only connection between Prometheus and Alien.

E.I.A. Makes Amazon Take Whale Meat Off The Virtual Shelf

A United Kingdom based Environmental Investigation Agency has put the pressure on Amazon Japan for selling whale meat.  They put up the following video on Vimeo and created quiet the ripple in environmentalist circles around the globe.  Warning : Graphic Imagery.

While I find this video a little goofy and comical in a way, I also support the message they are trying to convey.  And it appears to be working because Amazon Japan has stopped the sale of whale meat as a result of public outcry from the west.  But that battle has only just begun, because they are still selling more than just whale meat...
"In just 24 hours, more than 35,000 supporters have appealed to Amazon for a total ban on the sale of whale, dolphin and porpoise products. The public wants these animals protected rather than killed and sold for profit." -- Mark Jones

I am not a vegetarian or vegan as I'm sure you know, I rarely eat seafood (being a scuba diver and all) other than fish I harvest with my own energy, but I do not support the harvesting of endangered species to turn a profit.

If you are unaware of the issue at hand, I suggest you take a look at both The Cove and Sharkwater.  Both of which are excellent documentaries and personal favorites of mine.

Firearm Licencing and Registration Plus Bill C-19

Being me, Tom E Gunn, I tend to encounter a lot of negative flak towards my beliefs about firearms. Most people disagree with me and preach of bad firearms that are evil and weapons of death and destruction.  Some people ask me why I have my beliefs.  Some of those 'some' are comfortable enough with the concept of personal knowledge to agree or constructively argue with me. But very few agree completely with my views on Licencing and Registration of firearms.  And those very few are 99.9% of the time firearm owners themselves.

What are my views you ask?

Education in proper handling, safe use and storage of a firearm and then licencing those that are competent enough to follow said directions (and understand why) is an extremely good measure.  We would not want to be selling a car to someone with epilepsy or narcolepsy would we?

Registering and keeping a database of firearms, their owners, and locations is extremely dangerous -- therefore I am eagerly awaiting the senate to pass Bill C-19.  This database is so dangerous that is it considered Protected C information under the federal privacy protection laws of Canada. I could give you dozens upon dozens of reasons for why this "extremely sensitive information if compromised, could reasonably be expected to cause extremely grave injury..." but I will not be the one to educate you. Not today.

Instead, I leave you with a quote, a comic and finally a video that serves as a bit of a history lesson.

And if you still find yourself sitting there thinking, "Damn, this Tom E Gunn character is PARANOID!" I would present to you an antithesis to your arguable opinion, that you are suffering from a normality bias.

For further reading on the topic I strongly suggest heading over to http://tyrantman.wordpress.com/ or your local university library and asking where the history section is...

A Typical Barkyard Adventure with the Huskies

Just another typical summer day hanging out with some huskies.  They spend their days going in and out of the house.  They love the comfort of a couch and the shade of the roof, but they also love the open space of the yard.  So the mental conflict arises of what to do! Play ball?  Or camp out on the couch in the AC?

So we run around until we are too hot, then beg to go inside, have a big drink of watch, nap for 30 min, and do it all over again!

The big husky is Sahvin (pronounced Saw-vin).  And the spry little husky is Charles or Charlie (originally Charlotte). They both were fated to be working dogs at a dog sledding lodge in Quebec City, but ended up becoming my pets instead.  Sahvin was a gift for my 21st birthday, and Charles was a spur of the moment impulse buy while on vacation in Quebec.  And yes, I know, gift pets and impulse pets are bad ideas but in this case it worked out.

During the filming of this video, Sahvin was 3 and Charles was 1 and 1/2 years old.

Priceless Super-Saiyan Parody

So Youtuber KillaKarisma seems to think he's a bit of a wiz kid and did a tribute video to Dragonball Z.  While it is cute in its own way, watching it from start to finish is not necessary -- just scrub through it to get an idea of whats going on for the parody.

Meanwhile Youtuber Mattthecatrobinson, a personal favorite of mine, put a bit of a twist on the video.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Impressions

Character Setup;

“Welcome to the N7 Special Ops Team.”

Well first things first, they direct you to a store, where with a currency of credits (which you have zero and I cannot figure out how to earn more of) they give you a free starter pack that unlocked 4 items and a character.  The next screen is character select screen where you can choose from Adept, Soldier, Engineer, Sentinel, Infiltrator, and Vanguard – each of which are level one (except Soldier who is level 3 thanks to the free starter pack unlock of Krogan). Every class has one character available and 3 more that can be unlocked, each with a different look or race plus differing skills.

For my first attempt at a match, I went with Adept (Human Male with the skills Warp, Singularity and Shockwave) solely because that was my play style and skills used in Mass Effect 2.

Next you get to customize your Appearance.  Here you get to choose your Character Name, adjust your Primary Color and Highlight Color.  There are options for Secondary Color, Pattern, Pattern Color and Lights – all of which are greyed out at the start of the demo and say “Customization options for this character are unlocked with class XP bonus cards, available in reinforcement packs.”  I set my character name to ‘Tom E Gunn’ and went for black as a Primary Color, and white as a Highlight color – pretty much every color in the rainbow is there to choose from.

The multiplayer menu has 5 choices, Quick Match, Create New Match, Character, Leaderboards, and Store.

Going backwards, the Store has the Recruit Pack and Veteran Pack for 5000 Credits and 20000 Credits respectively.  The packs include 5 random items or characters.

Next is the Leaderboards, which has a window for Friends, Country, and Global and before playing I ranked as 1, 597 and 7351.  After five matches I was ranked 1, 509 and 6304.

Now the Character menu is a bit more complicated with options for Powers, Weapons, Appearance, Equipment and Store.  Selecting Powers beings you to a familiar menu from Mass Effect 2 where I chose to learn Warp. Surprize! A new menu, each skill has a skill tree of 6 ranks!  Selecting Weapons is a whole new menu where you can select from Sniper Rifle, Assault Rifle, Submachine Gun, Shotgun and Heavy Pistol.  You can also modify each weapon similar to how you can in previous games.  The major difference is you have a carrying capacity that directly affects your Power Recharge Speed.  The fewer weapons you carry, the quicker your skills reload, and the more you carry in your load-out, the slower your skills recharge. You can only select 2 weapons, and I went with an assault rifle, and a modified pistol with a sight attachment. Appearance is the same as before but the Equipment menu is totally new. Here there are options for Ammo Bonus, Weapon Bonus, and Armor Bonus – all of which are greyed out because I have none. And once again, Store is the same as before.

When creating a custom match you can make adjustments to Team, Location, Enemy and Challenge.  Team can be set to Public or Private.  Location is your map select. Enemy is locked onto Cerberus. And Challange can be set to Bronze, Silver or Gold which I am assuming is the difficulty.

And now...after all this writing, I finally get to click Quick Match...And it is the exact same menu as Create New Match except for options of randomization.

Searching for Games...

Gameplay Impressions;

So the multi-player is a 4 player co-op horde mode.  That is to say, 4 humans work together to kill waves upon waves of enemies.  Everything looks and feels pretty much the exact same as Mass Effect 2 except that powers’ ability to go around corners and attack enemies in cover is greatly improved. Also, the AI of the baddies is far superior to previous games, and actually quite intimidating...

I tried 5 matches, and well, I got stomped (quite literally) by the AI every match.

Match 1; the same as every first match of a game, discover the default is not inverted and proceed to invert the mouse.  Then admire the pretty colors until you are getting shot at, and then die. Plain and simple, I got caught in the open with my pants down having a nice wank to the amazing graphics.  While I was incapacitated I had the option to mash the X button (on Playstation) to slow the rate at which I bleed-out and give my human friends a chance to revive me.  Well, the AI got to me quicker, and stomped my face into little bits of goo and helmet...end match 1.

There is a pretty little debrief screen similar to that of Battlefield of Call of Duty that tells you how much experience you gained and if you levelled up.  Something I really appreciate and would like to note is that the amount of experience you earn on a kill is directly related to how much damage you did to the victim; unlike Call of Duty where points are just awarded for the kill.

I was then quickly thrown back into the load-out screen that lets you make customisations or level up before clicking ready to proceed to the next match.

Match 2; my allies and I thought we had a one up on the baddies by setting up a kill-zone around where they spawned last match...but guess what?  They AI spawning location is random, we got flanked, and for a second time my face met the boot of a Cerberus operative.

Match 3; I suspect this was when my allies realized this was a squad styled game, and that we have to work together – well 3 of us did at least... The one fellow who decided he would be a hero and ran off by himself was screaming to be revived over the microphone, and somehow the ‘hero complex’ infected me.  I ran out from cover, died, and got my face stomped by the AI – all within a matter of 15 to 20 seconds.  After that the two remaining allies, who were defending from cover, got bombarded with frag grenades until they were flanked and killed.  The debrief screen told me that I levelled up, so on the load-out screen I had 3 points to choose new powers with.

Match 4; things went pretty much the same in wave 1 – ally ran from cover, died, I ran to revive him, died.  But this time the two left made it to wave 2 so we all got revived!  This time we all stuck closely together, and tried to defend a location.  I did my Mass Effect 2 style of play of hiding in cover, then tossing a singularity at an enemy followed up by a warp to make them fly high into the sky.  This was working rather well, until the smoke screens arrived – the smoke prevents you from locking a power onto an enemy.  The AI tossed a few well placed smoke screens, along with frags, then once again flanked our cover and stomped our faces one by one.

This is when I decided that perhaps my team was cursed and I should try to find a new one.

Match 5; my last team was indeed cursed, and this new team was pro!  The trick seems to be sticking together, while moving together through the map from cover to cover to prevent the AI from surrounding and flanking you.  We obliterated wave 1, and in wave 2 I got my face stomped, due to falling behind the squad, but alas the team won and I was revived. Now wave 3 was a whole new ball game – in wave there you have 5 minutes to disarm 4 computer consoles.  This really puts this new found tactic of movement to the test.  We were successful in defusing 2 of 4, but while working on number 3 the room was flooded with smoke and my bomb tech friend was blown up by a frag grenade.  Once more I played into the motif of being killed while trying to revive my ally...and with that...the team fell.

Pro’s – I love it!  Amazing experience playing this game so far, it gets the heart pumping that’s for sure!  Very fast paced action, which I felt the old games lacked during action sequences. The AI has improved, directly changing the game play.  The multiplayer will be a great way to enjoy the game after beating the campaign besides just playing it again, and the levelling up in multiplayer gives the sense of progression and rewards the dedicated player.  I’m going to be buying this when it comes out, that’s for sure!

Con’s – I could not figure out how to customise the buttons that my skills are assigned to, which was extremely frustrating with trying to transition from my old play style and gut reactions. Oh, and inverted y-axis was not default.  That is all.

If you are a fan of the franchise, or have never played, I highly reccommend this game and suggest you head on over to Amazon and pick up a copy for either aXboxPC or PS3 version to have it on your doorstep on March 6th, 2012!

Cheers!

Looking Back at Laura's First Shooting Experience

Looking back once again at another episode this time brings us to Episode 2 – Laura’s First Time Shooting.  This day was not originally intended to be recorded, but instead just to expose another person to the sport.
Laura was a relatively new person in my life, introduced me to through a friend, and given they she has never met anyone who was a hunter, or a target shooter, she was one of those rare folk that did not initially say, “guns are bad, mmmmkay!” or “hunting is evil, just go buy what you need at the grocery store!”  She bombarded me with question of when, why, and where.
Actually our conversation was interrupted by a raccoon out the window stealing goldfish from a pond, but not for long as it was a perfect example of my moral stance towards nature.  Well, perhaps, but more so just that I despise raccoons.  But anyways, that lead to the debate of ‘offing’ the raccoon, or trapping it and hanging it over to animal control.  Naturally, being Canadian, I’d just reach for the closest hockey stick and run at subject while shaking the stick above my head and screaming nonsensical noises and sounds with the intention of frightening it away.

But what it it’s one of those ‘domesticated’ raccoons that for some reason are not afraid of humans and would gladly let you bludgeon it to pulp?  Well...that’s a question for each individual to answer.  To keep from breaking any bi-laws I would suggest it is time for a non-lethal trap, or perhaps a box propped up with a stick and a string tied to said stick...
Whooooaaaaa tangent thoughts...Pardon me; tend to get a bit caught up in this stream-of-consciousness style of writing sometimes....
Anywho!  So ultimately I convinced Laura I wasn’t a cold blooded killed who kills Bambi’s mother just to be a narrative device that makes Bambi cry and be propelled into an educational adventure!  And we went shooting!  And somehow, she agreed to let me document the entire thing on camera!  All and all she has turned out to be quiet the rad gal!  That enough blabbering from me, as the footage speaks for itself, but here is a few words from Laura on her experience;
“Going to the shooting range with Tom was a lot of fun! I had never shot or even held a gun before, and I didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be a great experience! Tom walked me though the steps of how to hold, load, and shoot a variety of different types of guns and he warned me about the kicks! He set up balloon targets for me to aim at, but the only balloon I hit was when I used the shotgun where, really, it would be harder to miss than hit. I look forward to going back to the shooting range and working on my aim!”  --Laura

As always, enjoy the footage and have a nice day!

Cheers!

Looking Back at Shooting Ketchup Balloons

Shooting Ketchup Balloons, the first episode of The Tom E Gunn Show, was originally recorded with the intention of testing various viscosities of red goo for creating realistic a blood splatter visual effect. Each balloon had a varying ratio of V8 Tomato Juice and Ketchup mixtures.  The Ketchup was too viscous to be realistic, much the same as the V8 was not even remotely close to the consistency of blood.  Now what I was looking for was something that would flow down a wall at a quick enough rate while still being sticky enough to create nice trails.

But alas, with the video camera being a totally new tool for me, I made a few mistakes...  For one, the framing was all wrong and the camera was zoomed in too much and did not capture the entire explosion of the balloons.  Second of all I was a total n00b when it came to editing -- looking back with what I know now it is pretty obvious.  Thirdly I did not possess a high enough quality camera to properly key out (the weather channel green screen technique, made famous by George Lucas in Episode 1) the background due to the visual noise.  And finally the ratio between vlog and footage is too unbalanced, not to mention how horribly awkward I am in front of the camera.

Looking back, this is a video that I would like to revisit and remake in the near future, now that I possess the new equipment.  Oh, and thanks for reading the first official blog entry of The Tom E Gunn Show!

Cheers!  And Enjoy the video!
